Richard Bertram
Assistant Director, Estates
Richard Bertram was appointed as Assistant Director – Estates in October 2025 to oversee the effective service delivery and maintenance of our hospital and community sites. He leads a team of more than 80 multi-skilled tradespeople, engineers, apprentices and administrative colleagues.
He is a professional and enthusiastic Hospital Estates leader with over ten years’ experience working in and alongside Hospital Trusts across the north east of England, most recently as Interim Head of Estates for NTH Solutions. He has extensive experience in the maintenance, repair and continuity of service requirements of a live healthcare building and its wider estate – an incredibly nuanced and challenging environment in which to operate – delivering compliant services and capital backlog projects within budgetary constraints, and reducing running costs and environmental impact. He played a leading role in the development and launch of the Community Diagnostic Centre in Stockton-on-Tees, which will make a difference to patients and communities living in the Teesside and North Yorkshire areas for a generation to come.
A highly qualified and experienced commercial and industrial Engineer, Richard began his professional career working within his family’s industrial plant business across Tyne and Wear before moving into a healthcare environment. He is currently studying for a BSc in Facilities Management.
In his spare time, he enjoys spending time with his two sons, following Sunderland Football Club and attempting to play golf.
