NTH Solutions has recently played a crucial part in the launch of a significant expansion of the North Tees Operating Department, introducing two advanced theatres designed to enhance surgical capacity and patient care. The £4.3 million development includes a hybrid Robotic/Integrated Theatre and a dedicated Emergency Maternity Theatre, marking a substantial step forward in medical technology and efficiency.
At twice the size of the existing robotic operating room, the new hybrid Robotic Theatre significantly enhances the working environment for clinical teams while expanding surgical capacity. This adaptable space can accommodate general surgeries when the robot is not in use, ensuring maximum efficiency. A dedicated robotic training room has also been incorporated into the design, allowing clinical colleagues to receive training while the theatre remains operational for other procedures.
The newly constructed Emergency Maternity Theatre offers an expanded footprint and improved connectivity to the delivery suite, enabling faster and more efficient patient transfers. Additionally, a new two-bed recovery space has been integrated, complete with advanced clinical equipment, ensuring optimal post-operative care for maternity patients.
Beyond the new theatres, improvements are underway within the existing footprint, focusing on enhanced changing facilities, welfare spaces, storage, and recovery areas. The project is being delivered in five phases, with completion expected by November 2025. Currently, Phase 2 is in progress, featuring the creation of a new staff room to support improved workplace welfare and provide a comfortable break area.
Geoffrey Robinson Ltd was appointed as the principal contractor following a rigorous tender process. The company, renowned for its work on previous developments at North Tees, including the recent A&E refurbishment and Ward 24 upgrade, commenced construction in January 2024. Despite some unforeseen delays, the work was successfully carried out over a 14-month period.
Andy Talbot, Managing Director at Geoffrey Robinson Ltd, expressed enthusiasm for the project, stating: “This latest construction project for North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust represents another significant milestone in our long-term partnership. It’s fantastic to have been involved in this cutting-edge facility, which we know will enhance healthcare services for so many in the community.”
Jordan Pearson, Design and Development Manager at NTH Solutions, reflected on the journey from concept to reality: “It is a pleasure to be involved in such a prestigious project for the Trust. The initial discussions commenced in 2022, so it is incredible to see what started as a drawing on paper come to fruition. Despite several challenges, the rewards of this hard work are now being realised.”
Jordan would like to thank all parties involved, highlighting the collaboration between various departments to achieve a shared goal: “The disruption caused by the works has impacted not just the operating department but also the emergency department, maternity services, and the hospital switchboard. The patience and support from all these areas have been fantastic, demonstrating the power of teamwork to drive positive outcomes for patients and our colleagues alike.”
Stacey Hunter, University Hospitals Tees Group Chief Executive Officer commented: “The opening of the new robotic and emergency maternity surgical theatre is a sign of our dedication and commitment to providing cutting-edge medical facilities to benefit patients throughout the region.”
The completion of these cutting-edge theatres marks a transformative step for North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust, reinforcing its commitment to delivering high-quality patient care and advancing surgical capabilities. The construction project was managed by NTH Solutions LLP, as the Trust’s estates and facilities management company, we delivered this build with enhanced efficiency, state-of-the-art technology, and improved facilities for both colleagues and patients. This development reflects the power of collaboration and innovation between NTH Solutions, University Hospitals Tees and various external stakeholders.
