North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust’s new energy centre has won a regional award and also been placed second nationally at the Energy Efficiency Awards for its contribution to solar photovoltaics (PV) renewable energy.
The new energy centre at University Hospital of North Tees was a deserving winner in the Small Scale Project of the Year category and also secured second place nationally in the Solar PV Project of the Year category in October. Both of these prestigious accolades were for the installation of solar PV panels to the centre which is part of the Trust’s ongoing drive to reduce its carbon footprint. The energy centre project was managed by NTH Solutions, the Trust’s subsidiary and provider of estates and facilities services.
In approximately 18 months the PV solar panels have generated 232,337 kWh of free energy for the hospital. An average house uses 10 kWh per day, which is equivalent to powering over 23,000 homes for a day or a financial saving of around £25,000. What’s more, NTH Solutions fully expects these figures to improve further as the panels were not 100% operational during this time due to the completion of the energy centre works.
Steve Taylor, Assistant Director of Estates and Capital for NTH Solutions said: ‘Sustainability is a fundamental part of not only our future energy strategy but our inherent culture as an organisation. We all have a responsibility to do what we can to reduce our carbon footprint but it feels great to have been recognised, with the help of our partners, NG Bailey and Square 4 Services for our work through these awards, I’m extremely proud of the whole team!’
