The Northern & Yorkshire NHS Assessment Centre is a training scheme for NHS Estates Apprentices.

NYNHSAC directly train apprentices in engineering using the level 3 ‘Healthcare Engineering Specialist Technician’ (HEST) Apprenticeship Standard and ‘Science Industry Maintenance Technician’ (SIMT) Standards. This covers Electrical/Mechanical areas, Medical Electronics and Clinical Engineering. Additionally we manage apprentices on Apprenticeship Standards covering Carpentry/Joinery, Painting, Decorating and Plumbing.

    About us

The Northern & Yorkshire NHS Assessment Centre (NYNHSAC) began operations in 1974 as an NHS apprentice training scheme, based on DHSS memorandum HM (72/21), at the instigation of Mr W Murray OBE, former Chief Executive of the South Tees Acute Hospitals NHS Trust and remains the only centre left in the country delivering this work on behalf of estates departments.

NYNHSAC is responsible to NHS Employers within the Region and of the apprentices entering the scheme, over 96% have completed their training and been amalgamated into the NHS Employers, approximately 25% of those advancing to senior posts including chartered status.

The Assessment Centre mainly recruits, trains and/or manage estates apprentices in various NHS sites in the occupational areas of multi-skilled engineering, medical engineering, communication electronics, plumbing, painters/decorators and carpenters/joiners.

The Assessment Centre has been awarded ‘Beacon Status’ by the Rt Hon Alan Johnson MP, Minister of State for Lifelong Learning, Further and Higher Education, attended a Prime Ministers reception at 10 Downing Street all to acknowledge the contribution to the learning and development sector and achieved Grade 2 in Ofsted inspections under NHSE NE&Y Apprenticeship contract. It has also received national recognition in the ‘Apprenticeship Task Force – final report’ for good practice and holds ISO 9001:2015 quality registration and Matrix Training Standard accreditation.

    What is an apprenticeship?

An apprenticeship is a paid job where the apprentice learns and works at the same time and gains valuable experiences in order to qualify for their apprenticeship. They get paid a salary and be part of a team, just like any other employee except their main aim is to learn and achieve their apprenticeship.

There are many different levels of apprenticeship from Level 2 to 7 – this Centre mainly deals with level 3 but the employers give opportunities to progress to higher levels once the level 3 is completed.
